Hippo sightings continue to increase in the thriving City of Hutto, Texas. Local legend traces the movement of Hippos to the area back to 1915 when a Hippo decided to get off a circus train which had stopped to take on water and fuel and to allow care of the animals on the train. After a leisurely and somewhat disruptive stroll through the area, the Hippo fell in love with the people and the community. Although fellow circus workers convinced the Hippo to reboard the train, the Hippo vowed to return. The Hippo made such an impression, that the High School wanted to adopt the Hippo as their mascot. When his contract with the circus was fulfilled, the Hippo returned to Hutto and accepted the offer of High School Mascot where to this day he continues to welcome students, faculty and visitors to the High School. Hutto High School remains the only school in the United States with a Hippo. As word traveled about quality of life, opportunities, and attractions in the Austin Area, people moved here from all over and continue to do so. At the same time, Hippos began moving to the area and located primarily in and around Hutto. At first, they were hardly noticed as they fit in and worked hard in various professions from the culinary to financial and all the professions between including those Hippo moms who remain at home. They participate in all the High School fundraisers and attend all the local events put on by students. When students have out of town events, the Hippos, having become very Tech Savvy, have Text, Facebook, You Tube, and Twitter parties to follow those activities. They text so fast you can barely see their webbed toes touch the keyboard. They generally do not travel to out of town activities due to the ever increasing number of semi trucks required to transport them as well as time constraints. Except for the minor incident with that one section of bleachers, (which was located where the Hippos now stand), they can get a crowd excited and the Hutto teams motivated. They yell till they get horse, and they love to do the wave. You just have not lived until you see the Hippos do the wave which is the reason the bleachers were not rebuilt. They are demonstrative fans of all High School events. Always friendly and helpful, they get excited when you talk about the High School experience. On interview after interview with these wonderful neighbors, to a Hippo, they encourage students to complete their High School education and participate with other students in activities whether that is sports, drama, speech, science, or other areas of interest.
